Back after a break

If you’ve noticed that this blog has been very quiet for a while… there is a good reason. I took a year out before starting uni and ended up spending most of it in Revelstoke, Canada, training to become a ski instructor. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Between long days on the mountain, early starts, and generally trying not to fall over in front of small children learning to ski, the blog definitely took a back seat!

Revelstoke itself is brilliant. It’s this small mountain town in British Columbia with amazing snow, a really chilled atmosphere and a great food and coffee scene (which I obviously made the most of). My favourite coffee stop was La Baguette, which became part of my daily routine. Whether it was a pre-ski shot of caffeine or somewhere to warm up after a freezing day on the slopes, it was always a good choice. Their best dish by far was their breakfast bagel - avocado, bacon, cheese and some kind of pickle that was delicious.

One thing I didn’t fully prepare for though was Canadian mountain food. When you’re skiing all day you feel like you’ve earned the calories, which is probably why poutine becomes such a regular feature. For anyone who doesn’t know, it’s basically chips, cheese curds and gravy… which sounds questionable but is actually addictive when you’re cold and hungry. Between that and the portion sizes in general, it was a real test of my future nutrition knowledge.

Now that I’m back in the UK and studying Food & Nutrition at Sheffield Hallam University, I’m really excited to get back into writing. My time in Canada definitely changed the way I think about food, energy and performance, especially with how important nutrition is when you’re active every day. Going forward, this blog will be a mix of restaurant reviews, student-friendly food, nutrition insights and whatever else I’m currently obsessed with.
