One of many food tours, Bangkok, Thailand
After a rather lively night enjoying the what nightlife Bangkok has to offer and a little amount of sleep the only logical option to attempt to cure our weariness was to venture into the world of Bangkok's food scene. Thankfully said food tour was via tuk-tuk so we could escape the deadly Thai sun (the Thai sun famously being much hotter than the one we have back home).
It is important to mention that this tour was featuring only Micheline Guide restaurants so naturally I figured the bill would rack up quite quickly - however I forgot how affordable Bangkok really is.
We started as all tourists do when landing in Thailand with a Pad Thai for only 4 pounds. I was confident in saying that it was hands down the best Pad Thai I have ever had. The best part is that we got a meal with a view - the Pad Thai was being made right at the very front of the restaurant by the head chef. I have to say I was mighty jealous of his humungous wok and wok burner.
One of my favourite aspects of South East Asian food culture is that 90% of dishes come with a little sauce on the side. It was always a fun game whether to chance it and dump the entire lot onto my food and hope my spice tolerance could with the battle. I was certainly humbled from time to time coming here as a man who claimed 'I can handle the heat.'
One of my favourite moments of the trip had to be when we had Mango Sticky Rice for the first time. As a 20 year old I have a lot of friends who had spent months in South East Asia and they came back saying the same thing. 'You HAVE to try mango sticky rice.' Me being the big foody I am, I had very high expectations for a wild but wonderful dish. The words that came out of my mouth when the dish was handed to me were 'It’s just mango and rice!?!' Look, in hindsight it was stupid of me to assume it would anything else but I just couldn't fathom how sticky rice and mango could be the best dish from months of travelling and eating some of the finest foods this planet has to offer. It was no where near my top 5 possibly even top 10 dishes I had. But, it was a refreshing and sweet dish. The key is clearly in the freshness of the mango - try to make one over here with our mangos that taste like they’ve never seen the sun and you will be left very disappointed.
